Dress for the place, then go one step further. For coffee or a walk: a good knit, dark jeans and boots. For dinner, swap the jeans for trousers or a skirt, or the knit for a silky top or a shirt. For drinks or a show, add one piece with shine or texture: velvet, satin, leather. A date isn't the time to try a new silhouette; wear the cut you know suits you, in a better fabric.
Let the coat be part of the look. A long wool coat in camel, black or chocolate looks dressier than a puffer and keeps you warm on the walk between places. Thin warm layers go underneath: a thermal under a silky top, fleece-lined tights under a dress. Bring a scarf you can leave on the chair rather than a bulky jumper you'll have to keep on.
A knit or long-sleeve dress with tights and knee boots; a satin or silk top with tailored trousers and heeled ankle boots; or a leather or suede skirt with a fine roll neck. Small gold jewellery and a structured bag finish any of them.
A merino or cashmere jumper in a dark or rich colour, or a dark shirt, with charcoal trousers or dark jeans, Chelsea boots or loafers, and a wool overcoat or a leather jacket with a scarf. Skip the hoodie and the running shoes: one considered layer reads as effort without trying too hard.
A coffee date is in daylight, so keep it relaxed: a knit, jeans and clean boots or leather trainers. A dinner date is in the evening, so darker colours, smoother fabrics and dressier shoes, like heeled boots, loafers or polished Chelsea boots.
Something you've worn before and feel good in, so you're not adjusting it all night. A first date is often a drink or dinner somewhere warm after a cold walk: a coat you're happy to be seen taking off, a top that looks good sitting down, and shoes you can walk ten minutes in.
Yes. Dark, well-fitting jeans with a fine knit or a silky top, a wool coat and leather boots look dressed up enough for most dinners. Save light-wash and ripped denim for daytime.
Black, chocolate, burgundy, deep green and camel look rich in evening light. One colour head to toe, or two close shades, looks more considered than several bright ones.
Heeled ankle boots or knee boots with a block heel: dressy, warm and steady on wet streets. Loafers or ballet flats work when it's dry and you'll be walking.
Only if the place calls for it. A knit with a wool overcoat looks just as smart and less stiff. If you wear a blazer, choose a soft, unstructured one in wool or corduroy.
Counted from 18 of these looks.
Black, brown, red and cream come up most often across these looks, so they make an easy base to build on.
Most whole outfits here cost between £554 and £845; the typical one is £718. Swap any piece to change the total.
Most pieces come from Wax London, Tommy Hilfiger, Howlin, Rothy's and Universal Works. Each look checks out on the stores' own sites, one store at a time.
For a casual daytime date, clean leather trainers are fine. For dinner or drinks, boots or loafers show you made an effort.
