By Ivan Kachur · Updated October 2026 · What business casual means, and what to wear
It's the dress code between a suit and weekend clothes: tailored trousers or chinos, a shirt, a polo or a fine knit, a blazer when the day calls for it, and leather shoes. No tie or full suit, but no hoodies, athletic wear or beat-up sneakers either. Offices differ, so look at what your manager wears on a normal day and match that.
Many offices allow dark jeans, especially on Fridays. Keep them dark, clean and straight, and wear them with something smart, like a blazer, a crisp shirt or a fine knit, and leather shoes. Light washes, rips and baggy cuts read as weekend. On a day with a client meeting or a presentation, choose trousers instead, whatever the dress code allows.
Swap fabrics rather than formality: wool or flannel trousers instead of cotton, a merino or cashmere sweater over a shirt, a wool coat over everything, and leather boots instead of loafers on wet days. Turtlenecks are business casual too, alone or under a blazer.
Tailored trousers, a midi skirt or a knee-length dress; a blouse, a fine knit or a shirt; a blazer or a cardigan; and loafers, flats, low heels or sleek ankle boots. Keep hems around the knee or below, and choose fabrics that hold their shape through the day.
Chinos or wool trousers, an oxford or button-down shirt, a polo or a merino sweater, an optional blazer, and loafers, derbies or leather boots. A belt that matches the shoes, socks that match the trousers, and the shirt tucked in. Navy, grey, stone and brown go with each other in any combination.
Start with neutrals that all go together: two pairs of trousers (navy or charcoal, and a lighter one like stone or camel), three or four tops, one blazer and one pair of leather shoes or boots. Add color through a knit or a shirt. Ten pieces like that make two weeks of outfits without repeating one.
In many offices, clean minimal leather sneakers are accepted with chinos and a knit. Running shoes and chunky sneakers aren't. If you're unsure, wear loafers or boots.
Yes, a plain knit or piqué polo with chinos or trousers is business casual, especially in summer or a relaxed office.
Usually not on their own. Ponte trousers, which look like trousers but feel like leggings, are a good alternative.
Not every day. Keep one at work for meetings; a smart knit over a shirt works on other days.
Lean slightly formal: tailored trousers, a crisp shirt or blouse, a blazer and leather shoes. You can dress down once you've seen what everyone wears.
