It's the outfit for errands, coffee, a long walk or a weekend away: comfortable, warm and still put together. The formula is simple: a soft top layer (a sweater, a sweatshirt or a flannel), easy bottoms (straight jeans, cords or relaxed trousers), a warm jacket and shoes you can walk in. What makes it look considered rather than thrown on is a coat that fits and colors that go together.
Start with the jacket. A puffer or a parka is the warmest for its weight; a shearling-lined trucker or a wool overshirt works on milder days. Add a beanie and a scarf before reaching for a thicker sweater: you lose a lot of heat through your head and neck. Lined jeans, or a thermal layer under regular denim, make a bigger difference on a long walk than a heavier coat.
Keep one piece sharper than the rest. A wool overcoat over a hoodie and jeans, or leather boots instead of running shoes, lifts the whole look. Avoid a sweatshirt, sweatpants and a puffer all from the same sportswear line; mix in denim, flannel or wool.
Boots whenever the sidewalk is wet: a lug-sole Chelsea or a lace-up boot goes with jeans, cords and leggings alike. Leather sneakers are fine on dry, cold days. Keep canvas and mesh sneakers for spring; they soak through in slush and salt marks them.
Fit and color. A coat that ends at the hip or below the knee rather than mid-thigh over a long sweater; trousers that touch the shoe without pooling; and no more than three colors across the outfit. One leather piece, a bag, a belt or boots, makes knitwear and denim look finished.
A grey or navy sweater over a tee, dark straight jeans, a parka or a chore coat, and brown leather boots. A beanie finishes it; swap the sweater for a flannel shirt on milder days.
Yes, as a middle layer: under a wool coat, a puffer or a shearling-lined jacket, a hoodie looks intentional. On its own it's only warm enough for short trips on mild days.
Regular leggings aren't, on their own, below about 40°F. Fleece-lined or thermal leggings are, especially with a long coat and boots that cover the ankle.
Easy neutrals that all go together: navy, grey, cream, camel, olive and brown, with blue denim. Then the coat, the knit and the boots can be mixed every day without thinking.
