Everything around the skiing: the trip there, the village, the lodge, après-ski and dinner. On the slopes you need ski-specific kit these looks don't include: a waterproof, insulated ski jacket and trousers, a thermal base layer, ski socks, gloves, a helmet and goggles. Most resorts rent the boots, the skis and the helmet.
The same three layers work on and off the slopes. A thermal or merino base layer keeps sweat off your skin; a fleece, a quarter zip or a light puffer is the warm middle; a waterproof shell or a ski jacket goes on top. Avoid cotton next to the skin: it stays wet and gets cold.
Warm and relaxed, with one piece that looks good indoors: a chunky Fair Isle or cable knit, a fleece or a shearling-lined jacket, jeans, warm trousers or leggings, and snow boots that grip on icy paths. A beanie hides helmet hair.
Two base layers, two mid-layers, a ski jacket and trousers, three or four pairs of ski socks, gloves, a neck warmer and a beanie. For the evenings: one or two knits, jeans or warm trousers, snow boots and a puffer or parka. Pack light: you'll wear the same coat and boots every day.
Wear the bulkiest things on the journey so your bag stays light: the snow boots, the puffer or parka and a heavy knit. Add a tee underneath for a warm train or car, and keep gloves and a beanie in a pocket for the first cold step outside.
Jeans or warm trousers, a heavy knit or a fleece, a puffer or a parka, and lined waterproof boots. A beanie and gloves, and a flannel shirt under the knit for the lodge.
Not on the slopes: denim soaks through and freezes. Jeans are fine for the village, the lodge and après-ski.
For a first day on gentle slopes, a waterproof, insulated parka can work. A wool coat or a puffer that isn't waterproof will soak through after a autumn.
Waterproof, insulated boots with a deep lug sole, like snow boots or lined hiking boots. Fashion boots with smooth soles slip on icy resort paths.
Often what they skied in, with the jacket off. If you change, a chunky knit, jeans or warm trousers and snow boots are the classic outfit.
